Generally the whole reason that edits exist is to
help the storyteller tell their story. It is the final stage for the script
where you take a film that is on paper and create a masterpiece, without
editing the rushes that you get from filming are useless.
The whole point of editing the story together is to
make sure that you are making sure that the audience is going to like it and is
not going to get bored half way through so the editor has to make sure that the
way they edit the film is going to keep the audience engaged the whole way
through. some stories are edited with the timelines of the story completely the
wrong way around starting at the end and then showing the process of how they
got to that state so the film starts and ends at the same place.
The Time Travellers Wife is a very good
example of how the film is edited to keep the audience engaged with the
story going from different times starting and ending in the meadow of the
character Clair's back garden but the narrative is all over the place with the
main character Henry travelling to crucial points in his timeline making
the audience wonder what twists there is going to be in the story next and so
keeping them on the edge of their seats wanting more and wanting to know more
information.
see the link below for the two clips that is evidence for the statement I have made above:
Development of Drama being another aspect of an editor’s
job. Take a romantic comedy for instance the scenes where the couple are
starting to realise that they may be falling in love. We see the very close
intimate shots taking us into how those characters are feeling, without those
shots being edited into the scenes we do not get the same effect as if we were
to get a long or mid shot of the same action. Such as the characters kissing,
as the scene progresses and the couple gets closer, if we didn't see the close
ups of the faces and seeing the emotions of the characters we wouldn't know
what emotions the characters where feeling.
An example of where editing has been very clever
when it comes to seeing the characters relationship develop, is in the film
Friends With Benefits; where they are having sex with each other but are
not in a relationship, however as the scenes go on you can see the
connections between the characters gradually improving as they start to do
things such as date nights.
finally the Relationship to Genre is, where the
edits have to add to the theme of the product for instance a comedy would have;
say a train crash, where there is someone standing on the tracks and here's a
train coming towards them, the edits are showing that there is enough time to
get out of the way of the train, for instance there's a long shot of the train
about 15 feet away and the person is just there screaming, pleading with the
train not to run him over; when he could just dive out of the way. There is a
scene in Austin Powers where this is happening with a steam roller. So you see
the edits are clever in that it goes from; the man we see that is about to be
run over close up so we don't see the distance, however we are then shown a
long shot to show how much time the man had to get out of the way of the machine.
Seeing the relationship of the genre to the shots and editing that is going on
in the comedy.
